I am learning the ropes with my Woodland Scenics Static King static grass applicator. But I am having trouble finding a suitable dark green colour. I have WS dark, medium and light green grass in various lengths. Also some Peco summer grass, 4mm. But these greens all look too bright and artificial to my eye, reminding me of Astro-turf. The pictured grass is a mix of WS 2, 4, and 7mm dark green with about 25% medium green. I prefer the darker shades of the WS clump foliage in the right foreground which are Dark Green and Forest Blend .

Does anyone know of a darker green static grass made by other manufacturers? Or could I dry brush the grass tips with some darker green? Or a dusting of dark with an air brush? Would powders work? What about Pan Pastel?  They make a dark green and it could likely be brushed lightly through the grass. Would dullcote spray have any effect? Open for any ideas. Thanks.

I enjoy air-brushing, so will likely give that a cautious (thanks @John Sethian ) try.

My lights are dimmable warm white LED's. For layout lighting, I prefer these to florescent, incandescent or halogen. I am in a basement, so little natural light gets in. Light source certainly does have an influence on final appearance as @Dave Koehler mentions, but I am stuck with LED's.

Scenic express has every shade of grass imaginable. Call Jim and see what he has available.

Wow, Scenic Express has a long list of product. Heki and Noch dark green appear to be the right shade, at least in the pictures.

Thank you all.

Bob

You might try soaking the grass in liquid Rit clothing dye before placing it. Then spread it out to dry before installation. An India ink/alcohol mixture would probably also work, but ink is available in fewer colors.

EDIT: Since static grass is a synthetic fiber, the specific Rit product you want is called "Dyemore", which is formulated for synthetic fabrics.
