On low voltage from the transformer the engine does a jogging and an humming off and on sound . When given more power the engine runs great but you can hear the humming cycling but very faint . I haven't run this engine since 2018 . Could it be the battery in the tender and is this a simple job to replace. Also is the battery a 9v or a special one .

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Anthony

Those engines have QSI sound and reversing boards with a 9-volt battery on them.  I have two of these locomotives and have converted mine to TMCC.  I know that strange things happen when the battery runs down.  I recall it being a standard 9-volt alkaline, not a rechargeable.

You'll need to remove the tender shell to access the battery.  There are 6 small screws (4 in the corners and 2 at the midpoint of each tender side) that hold the tender floor to the rest of the shell.  Be careful not to pinch the tether wires when you re-assemble the tender.
