They don't as the connection is internal. They obviously insure the two caps are identical in internal resistance so that any charge/discharge will be equal. The individual caps used in the 9V BCR can't be matched that close, so Zener diodes are used.
John, If you can find 2 identical Caps, why can't you find 4? From a technical document I found you don't really need protection on just 2 caps. Once you move up the # of caps above 2 zeners are recommended.
I seriously doubt they are measuring and matching caps to make the 5V version.
The are just the 2.7V one internally connected. G
