Hello Folks,

I'm looking at a MTH SW-1500 PS-2 switcher (30-2981-1). The seller has been quite forthcoming and says that the circuit board has a blown capacitor. I understand that this was a fairly common problem with some PS-2 engines. I've replaced defective capacitors on circuit boards before...any reason to fear this one?

Thanks in advance.

If it's the large 330uf 35V cap, I've replaced a few of those.  George is correct that it's a fragile board, but I have a few PS/2 5V equipped engines that are still running fine.  It's cheap to replace the cap, might as well give it a shot.

For that cap, I pry the board apart as far as possible without breaking anything, then reach in with a slim tip soldering iron to desolder the cap.  Heat the far side and rock the cap toward the edge, then heat the near side and rock it back.  A couple of times and the cap will be out.  Clean out the holes and solder the new cap in.
