Hello. I inherited a small Lionel 0 gauge set from my father. I have set up an oval with 2 sidings off of 2 switches. The switches have power but I cannot get them to operate properly. They act like there is a spring holding them back when I try to change the switch, going half way and back rapidly, over and over, until I release the switch. They both will switch manually, and freely, as long as the power to the track is off, but return to the original position upon powering up. Is there anywhere I can get some troubleshooting advice, or is there a wiring issue? They both have the extensions installed that make the curve and straight section a modular length. Thanks.

I think this is a wiring issue, that your wires coming from the controller are not attached to the correct posts on the switch.
if they are the no derailing type. did you use the insolated pin if not they may be grounding

I'm guessing that they look like this;
If so, recheck the wiring from controller to switch and make sure the insulating pins are in the correct rails.

This would be my guess as well. That chattering is an indication that the coils are both active and fighting each other.
Good advice above from all the contributors. Check that you've got the plastic/fiber pins in the right positions and then check the connections of the wires from the controller to the switch.
Like you, I was once a novice but feel I've graduated to apprentice. I recently bought a bunch of non-working switches at bargain basement prices because now I can perform simple repairs on them. Guys like ADCX Rob above are valued and valuable "master trainers" on this forum.
