had prominent layout builder tell me that Z2500 switch machines were unreliable and that he preferred tortoise switch machines. The tortoise machines seem to me to use complicated mechanics ( under table mounting ). I love my FasTrack cc switches but all the major layout builders say don’t use FasTrack. Would appreciate your opinions on tortoise vs Z2500 switch machines.

The Z2500 switch machines aren't reliable. You're better off with Z1000 switch machines.

Ask ten different people and you’ll get ten different answers. If you like the CC switches from Lionel and had good results then why change.
Let's see how fast we can get to ten! On my last switching layout, I used NJ International switch machines. I liked them and thought they worked pretty well. I think in 10 years, I only had to replace one of the 6 switch machines. I don't believe they have been made for some time now, but they do pop up for sale on eBay and other places.

I am probably obsolete regarding new accessory equipment but since 1992 I have had good experience with Tortoise DC switch machines. On one layout (RIP) I powered 28 machines with AC via ACS modules/diodes operating from a handheld remote but over time have found that using DC from a old HO power pak or a 12VDC wall wart was a simpler and more effective method.
