I am totally taken by the small road switcher(s) that go by a confusing array of numbers (at least for me they are confusing)  --- SW-1, SW-1000, SW-1500, SW-8, SW-9, NW-2 --- and maybe more.

I want a 3-rail for my layout, for sure!  I love the body shape with that unique drop-down hood just before the cab. I think no other diesel is as “pretty.”

I am not partial to rail line, road number or paint scheme (although I do like the C&O).  And I run everything conventionally (although I do have one MTH proto 2 engine and another wouldn’t bother me). Bottom line, I’m quite happy with just bell and a whistle.

What I do want, however, is smoke. I REALLY REALLY would like this thing to smoke --- is that possible? Does Lionel or Atlas or MTH or anyone sell such?

I’d sure appreciate an answer/advice and I thank you in advance. Happy New Year.

Eddie,

All of MTH's PS2 and PS3 (if any are out yet) ALCO S2's smoke and have the full complement of MTH's PS2/PS3 features and functions. Many of these features and functions, including protocouplers, work under conventional control, as well as under DCS. I own a couple of these and can testify that they work very well.

You can find one of them here, however, there are quite a few from which to choose.

I have two MTH RS-1s (one PS2, one 3) and an Alco S-2. Real good smoke (especially the RS-1s), but they are much larger engines if that matters to you. With my SW1500, I got around the smoke issue by buying a dummy unit for it and drilling out the smokestack and put in a fan smoke unit for it. Added all kinds of LEDs and detail to it and most people think that it's the powered unit when they are linked together.
