HOW difficult is to take the Lionel Joshua Lionel Cowen challenger apart. The smoke unit needs to have the fan glued to motor shaft and fluid cleaned of shaft. Also I want to do the modification shown in the lionel video on these early smoke units. thanks for any help.

It's a simple one. You won't have any problems if you take your time.
Be careful not to 'knick' the PCB lead when enlarging the hole. I didn't use a drill, I just twisted the bit by hand for more control. It cuts easily.
Don't forget to enlarge gasket hole too.
There's no traces close, I just drill it with a 1/4" drill. I think there are only four screws to remove the boiler top on the Challenger.
Post a photo and the guys will direct you.
The boiler top screws are located under the articulated section between the first and second driving wheels. Swivel the articulated carriage to the sides and you can access the screws. The other two screws are located right behind the last set of driving wheels on the second set of drivers. If you remove those four, the boiler top can be removed. I'm thinking that there are also two rear handrails alongside the cab that you need to pull out from the bottom to free it,, I'm not looking at one right now. There are a couple of plugs for the antenna and cab light, and the top is free.
