I am wanting to make up a unit train consisting of '40s-'50s era tank cars. I'll combine cars from different manufacturers. Will the Lionel 2555 and 6415 cars "fit" with other scale tank cars? Scale details aren't a concern.

Smaller tank cars were the norm in the 40's, so those cars would fit right in. My 1940's scale tank car train. 
Really, it's darn hard to find a tank car that doesn't closely approximate the dimensions of some prototype somewhere sometime (an important consideration--like most other types of rolling stock, size tended to increase as the years went by).
The 2555 is the same size as the 715 scale tank car and and Intermountain 8000 gallon tank car. Can’t speak for 6415.
