Hi all.....did Lionel ever put a #2046W-50 tender in a #2671W box? My initial thought would be no, but someone told me later in production they did??

The issue is the wheel sets, whether 6 wheel trucks (2671 tender) or 4 wheel truck (2046-50 tender). The shell names of Lionel Lines versus Pennsylvania. Lionel did many strange things in both Prewar & Postwar.
They would have overstamped the 2671w box. That said, I have never seen one. And the price guides would have likely documented them by now.
I would suspect that a dealer would have removed the more desirable 2671W tender, and replaced it with the lesser desirable 2046-50 (tender marking, with 2046WX, marked on it's correct box). The chance of Lionel doing such a thing, would be VERY remote.
They did use other boxes when they needed to. A second stamping is always there though.
Thanks for the info. Dealer probably switched tenders. He said toward the end of production they put the 2046-50 tender in the 2671W hahaha you live and learn. Can't always trust EVERY TCA member. But hey......they are only toys and I love it hahaha
