Testors Clearcoat or similar for autographed train?

I have a MTH 2-8-0 from a RTR set which at some point was autographed in Sharpie. I noticed recently that the Sharpie was starting to fade and rub off a bit. Could Testors clearcoat or a similar product help prevent the autograph from rubbing off completely? Or is there another solution? I'd prefer to still be able to run this engine.

The tender is a plastic shell (I think), by the way.
