In a book on the history of the Texas Rangers they mention that Texas railroaders during thr 1880's were all appointed "Special Texas Rangers", with full legal authority to make arrests and wear sidearms during work. This included switchman, brakeman, trainmen, conductors, and engineers. This was to discourage train robbery. Has any other railroad done something similar? Does anyone know when this practice ended?
