Makes a lot of sense - why pay royalties to put the Lionel name on a product that has no relationship to Lionel? I'll be looking forward to seeing the new Tinplate Traditions catalog. And, more versions of the monorail means it's more likely there will be parts to fix the old ones. I'd love to have a monorail but I can't see where there's room on my layout for it.
 
If I get one (unlikely), I would get the modern version. The traditional motor is a lousy design and very trouble prone if you run it much. A friend of mine has one that is awaiting a motor transplant, hopefully to a can motor. MTH doesn't have motors so it will have to be a custom job. If I were to buy a new monorail, I would probably buy the can motor version, remove the PS/3 electronics for other use, and just put in a bridge rectifier to run the motor off the transformer. It doesn't need a reverse; the monorail won't go backwards very well anyway because of the way the trailer cars are attached.
