I've seen them up close and personal. The shape is aerodynamic, albeit nondescript. The F59PHi has/had a little more character. They need to put a shroud over that front end to clean it up since they rarely use the front coupler anyway.
I got the third one down from the top.
Well, I figure it is like this:
- People who live near commuter train routes take these things and see them every day and probably don't want to see them when they get home and have time to play.
- People who don't live near commuter train routes and don't take and see them every day probably don't care about them.
So I expect they will continue to get no respect except form the folks, like I used to be, who depend on them every day.
I'm practically in the same boat as Lee. I see MARC and VRE EVERY day, 5 days a week. They both run MP36s and similar cars. I see them so often, I don't really even pick up my head when they go by. Would I buy a MARC set...maybe. Since I see them so much, I would be likely to say "no".
MARC does use the front couplers somewhat regularly. It is somewhat common, on the heavier and faster trains running the Corridor, as well as up to Brunswick and Martinsburg and Camden Yards to have doubleheaders both with MP36s or a combination with MPs and older units.
There is an F59 for sale on the Bay right now!
Whose layout models commuter operations? I have yet to see one...that could be your answer..
I'd actually like one, the T one ( first one pictured) i think its neat looking and not to Mention that the MBTA actually has one in service!
Where did the actual photo's come from? I'll have to keep an eye out of when i can order one.
I like the wacky Rail Runner. The first time (while riding the Southwest Chief) I saw that bird I couldn't believe my eyes!
"There is an F59 for sale on the Bay right now!"
Has 4.3 miles, and 36 minutes on it according to the pictures,. I'd bet someone was very disappointed with it!
Another favorite.............I like the F59PHI too.

I'd really like a set of the NM Rail Runner!

The Rail Runner was on my "top three" wish list of passenger trains that I would like to see available in the marketplace. With the K-Line Bombardier cars long gone, I figured the likelihood of this set being made in O-Gauge was not good, so I had a custom set done.
This is one the most colorful passenger trains in service. It sure is an attention getter.

No Jim I.... I mean I'm sure THEY were happy with it I.... I mean THEY just didn't have any passenger cars with the MetroLink logo to go along with it. It was originally purchased to head up an Amtrak Superliner consist but just didn't look right. My F40 (I think thats it) just looks better since it is Amtrak also.

I attempted to send you an e-mail in response to your post, but it came back undeliverable. Please send me an e-mail to the one listed in my profile, and I will fill you in on the details of the Rail Runner.

Bingo! I will be modeling PRR commuter service on our layout, but it will be K-4s and P70 coaches though so...
Be interesting , with all of the non - Catalog, items: Ie: Pats trains, gondolas,
Nassau Hobby, switchers, and the Detroit club, that just posted their car:
Ogr forum: Non catalog, New Mexico, Rail Runner commuter cars.
I do believe we would have a winner!!
K-Line also did a set of aluminum Metro-North 15" Bombadier cars:
I saw a prototype for an 18" version at one of their Toy Fair open houses. It never made it into production, probably because of Atlas O making the 21" ones.
