I would be up for a Marion. I would prefer a good model that could be posed. I prefer that to a "working model". I think a working one would be problematic like what would you shovel ground foam? I think the model would break too easily.

Not sure which one would be correct for Rio Grande but I'm sure they had something.

It would go well with my TMCC crane Set so marked MOW would go well.

I believe the Denver and Rio Grande had a few Marion type steam shovels...

I'm in for one, although I think I would prefer a self-propelled one, not a MOW car, and a bit more modern.   More along the lines of the P&H steam shovel model that Lionel first offered in the late Postwar years as a flatcar load and continued to MPC/LTI.

What are those posted models?  HO?  I don't need fragile operating ones, and guess

brass ones already exist, but looks interesting.....

I think these below would be great "static" models for assistance... but I was looking to model a new spur with some excavation, or a spur with a quarry / mine on it... and felt the Marion or Bucyrus would be the "talk of the town" with full command, motion, smoke, and sound.

Could easily have course ballast pilled up to load. Just like some of the Post War accessories.

It would be a great addition, but getting one made could be an uphill climb.

Yep, Yep me too! I want a crawler version, and rail version!  I already have one of the TMCC work train cranes(MOW) and it gets used ay Club runs as much as any engine/train that we run, and sometimes I have to put the thing up. I would guarantee, that they wouldn't have any problem in selling these items in either version. I would think more in crawler version, than rail mounted version, but who's to say. Ok Lionel, you guys are way ahead of any of the other modelers, w/TMCC Crane, so I would bet you could fill the minimum order, off this forum alone!.........Brandy

Wow, great idea!   Steam sound.   Smoke from the stack.  Whistle-steam.  Operation sounds.   Both self-propelled and rail-mounted versions would be great!  

How about use a RC type control, or like the LionChief Plus remote?  Rather than Legacy or DCS control.   RC controller accommodates a wider audience, those with our without Legacy/DCS.

RC / LC+ is a good idea. A remote control steam shovel (particularly a crawler version) might interest quite a few people, not only in the train hobby but outside it. You could play with it just about anywhere and it might attract people into the hobby.

I am not into these vintage / obsolete models but I have seen a similar-looking steam shovel offered in 1:48 scale by TWH at one the die-cast online retailers I buy from. TWH who made it went out of business last year. From the photos it seems like it has a lot of operating features but I am not sure if is self-propelled.

This was my dad's... a little big for standard gauge though...

Here is a brass manufacture that makes a O, On3 Bucyrus - Erie scale steam shovel in 2 rail. Rocky Mountain Trains.  Looking at it the details are fantastic. This one could be made in 3 rail, die-cast, DCS or Legacy controlled.

Here is an Illinois Central prototype... just when you think your favorite railroad never had one!

Silver Lake, a friend of mine with a heavy equipment company sent me a couple of pictures a while back of this with a D9 cat in one of the buckets. Very impressive!

I believe the one your speeking about at York was the TWH model. Very nice indeed.

The Rocky Mountain Brass import is 615.00 dollars, yes very pricey.

But realize that a TMCC crane and boom car cost how much?

Better yet, why not offer a static model and one with electronics to help the ole pocket book if needed?

This one is my favorite to give a sence of scale.

Mike Mulligan was one of my favorite childhood books.  That and Wizard of Oz.  So count me in for a steam shovel and some flying monkeys! 

I can't remember why, but I've always had a fascination with steam shovels since I was a little kid. Mike Mulligan and Mary Anne look familiar. Maybe that's why. Neat topic.

I have young children who enjoy having books read to them Mike Mullican's Steam Shovel is a favorite. I wonder if Mary Anne's name is based on Marion steam shovels. It seems too close to be a coincidence. I have a neighbor who has a Marion name plate from a shovel.

I saw this on the bay really cool static model, made by Wiseman model services inc. An animated would be a real challenge but may if it just turned and lifted the clam shell boom would be convincing enough. Just thought I would share.
