I sure could have used that service when I worked in NYC.
That was pretty good complimentary service for a 15 cents token.
What's a drunk Staten Islander?
Did the car have a bathroom ?
Bar cars were a steady part of the consists on LIRR diesel trains. Electrics had portable bar carts. In the Morning, they served coffee, tea, buns etc. at Night it was beer, wine , hard drinks and lots of song. You could miss the delays that way. They were very popular as the photo suggests
Cha-Ching! That is what is called a revenue enhancer!
Might even help finance that expansion/extension everyone wants if run properly. ;-)
Cheers!

Do the LIRR electric trains still have bar cars?
It has been quite some time since I've been on those trains.
The Bar cars are no more on both the LIRR and Metro North.
Can you still buy a beer on the platform at Penn Station to take with you on the train ?
30 years ago you could. That was the best part of my day.
Here is a link for a New York Times story on the end of Metro-North's bar cars. I was on one a few years ago and glad I picked up a stray cardboard sign they had that indicated where the bar car was...
