China always is identified as one of the last bastions of steam. The SAR seems to be largely ignored. If Mike Wolf in his pursuit of foreign prototypes ever gets around to modeling the Class 26 Red Devil, I would break my vow of abstinence in a heartbeat Both 25 and 26 classes remind me of NYC's Niagaras.

South African steam locomotives are magnificent! It is said that the Red Devil produced 4000 DBHP! It is also said that if SAR locomotives were blown up from 3' 6" gauge to our 4' 8 1/2" gauge, their locomotives would have been bigger! It sounds as though SAR ran their steam locomotives at speeds which drew upon their horsepower sweet spot. Great tape - thank you for posting.

       Another country with nifty narrow gauge 4-8-4's was New Zealand.

Can we revisit how awesome the SAR locomotives were?  As said above, I know the are a smaller gauge but some MTH models based on the 25 and 26 nc classes, as well as the Beyer-Garrett locos would be great. I know you can get a Garrett style loco fromEts but its not quite the same.

 I also forgot how long those 25nc tenders were.  What Beasts!!

Beyer Garretts were fantastic locomotives. One of my co-workers from South Africa sent me a book called The Spirit of Steam in the mid 80's that has great full color photos and detailed text on the SAR. Garretts were still in use at the time and he also sent a video of Garretts in motion.  Really something to see.  Unfortunately it was PAL instead of NTSC so there is no way to watch it now that I'm back in the States.  There is a Garrett running in North Wales on the Ffestiniog which is 1 foot 11 7/8 gauge.  SAR is Cape Gauge, 3 foot 6 inch as is EAR (East African Railways) in Kenya.  If I'm not mistaken, they ran a few Garretts in Australia as well.
