Construction of my last Christmas layout began on Election Day 2006. I had 7 great Christmases with that layout in my living room window. Well, between taking it down and putting it up all those times and some damage from workmen who repaired my basement after a hot water heater burst,  I decided it's time for a new layout. So, fittingly, on Election Day 2013, construction began on my new Christmas layout. Here it is after the first day's work.

Christmas Layout begins 2

Target date for the completion of this layout is Thanksgiving weekend.

Well, although I consider myself the CEO of my railroad, the CFO/COO had requested the the railroad give up some real estate this holiday season. One foot in width to be exact, reducing it to 4' wide instead of 5' wide. That one foot presents quite a challenge. So I decided to take the challenge one step further. Instead of 5'x9', this years layout would be the traditional 4'x8'. Now how do I fit New York City in a 4'x8' space and keep the train layout interesting.

Here's how it's coming along so far:

Still a lot of work to do, but it's coming along.

Skip, that really looks nice.  Every year at Christmas time I look forward to seeing your Christmas layout.  Enjoyed the old layout and now I enjoy the new one.  I also bet that it really looks nice from the outside looking in.  I also look forward to seeing your New York City Christmas tour every year.  Happy Holidays to you and your family.  Thanks!

So, last night my son Tommy says to me, "Dad you need to move the Empire State Building." I didn't understand......he continued, "From outside, you can't see it." I checked it out and sure enough you had to look from a sharp angle to see it. So today, in addition to putting up the tree and putting on the tree lights, I moved around two buildings on the layout, the ESB and the Flat Iron Building. Now I think it looks pretty good, from inside and out!
