Some of our modular layout club members were having problems adding their MTH engines to the club's remote. There were some spots on the layout an engine would add and other spots it wouldn't. We had similar problems when we were using a Rev I TIU but not since we changed it out with a Rev L.

I took a PS2 engine to the layout and did some signal strength checks. Our outer loop is connected to Fixed 1 on the TIU. Signal strength readings were 8's, 9's, and 10's. No problem there. The inner loop and yard are connected to Fixed 2. Signal strengths were 1's, 2's, 3's, and 4's. I moved the inner loop over to Variable 2 and set the channel to fixed. Now I was reading signal strengths of 6, 7, 8, and 9.

It appears Fixed 2 channel has lost some signal output. Is it normal for a signal strength drop to affect only one channel and not the others? Are there any components that can be replaced (I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron) or will it need to go back to MTH?

Each channel has it's own  signal generator.I suppose  anything is possible. However I wouldn't rule out a lower dcs signal on the tiu channel ... Could be a loose connection someplace or interference from who knows what.

I would test the channel with a short  test track (one section  of  clean Gargraves or anything handy)  with  a  known  good engine. If you get a 10  the channel is OK.

Gentlemen,

What George says about testing the DCS track signal with a short piece of track and good wires is definitely a great test, most every time we test the TIU signal strength on a short section of track, we find the TIU is not at fault and that some place on the completed layout there is a problem, usually in the building method used, or there are certain rolling stock causing signal problems with the DCS signal strength.
