I'm intending to create a lash-up (sorry, don't recall the better/more orthodox description) led by a 3rd Rail GS-4, which has ERR sound and I think ERR cruise control whereas all the other engines behind it will be Legacy. I will run this under my Legacy CAB-2 and it has the latest Legacy version installed. I've run the GS-4 on its own under this system as a TMCC engine and it works fine.

Regarding the other engines in this set up, I've researched previous postings on this forum and read the latest Legacy manual but I'm still uncertain about two things:

The first is, do the engines behind the 3rd Rail steamer need to be set to CAB-1/TMCC control in the CAB-2 or can I simply leave their existing Legacy settings as they are?

The second is, if I access one of those engines individually to let off some whistle steam, will that affect its speed setting as part of the lash-up? I have not tried this yet as I've read about various speed differences between TMCC and Legacy engines in a CAB-2 operated train and don't want to risk damaging anything.

Thanks and sorry if this has been answered before.

The TMCC engine will make the Legacy engine run in TMCC mode without you having to change its setup. I'd run them uncoupled and separated a few inches  a bit to see if the rear overtakes the front.  A slight trailing and dropping behind of the rear engine is normal.

You can used the engine ID to jump to a specific engine to send it commands you do not send to the Train MU (Lashup)
