I have a Lionel 6-38017 late TMCC Mogul from around 2004-2005. Operating in conventional, everything works. Operating in command mode everything works except the chuff volume. It  intermittently drops off at random - sometimes normal volume, sometimes really low volume. All other sounds remain at full volume, and are functional.

I swapped another tender and the same sound issue occurred. This eliminates the Railsounds (4E) system and speaker in the tender as the issue. And if all other commands are received by the tender, I would guess the IR tether and boards are fine.

The chuff switch operates correctly. I have reprogrammed the loco. I have replaced the R2LC with a new one, and reprogrammed it. That didn't work either.

Does anyone have any ideas? Might it be the DCDS or motherboard? Would the AC regulator play a role? I am very confused how the chuff volume changes at random when it is triggered in a binary on/off way. I can't find any wiring diagrams for the DCDS to help either.

How far does the volume drop off? It has dyna chuff so accelerating it will be louder and lower then decelerating.

Pete

The volume increases and decreases by what I estimate to be 50%. The volume will fluctuate randomly while at constant speed, or when changing speed.

Yep, I have two of them... same issue. Its a sticky cherry switch. Its the switch that rides off of the cam of the drivers and relays the signal... Have not fixed mine yet.

My cherry switch is opening and closing correctly and generates a chuff signal every time. The issue is that the chuff volume randomly changes. Is that your issue?

If anything is binding even slightly, the RS may sense the slight difference in timing as acceleration and deacceleration and cause the effect.  That sounds like what you're hearing.

Thanks John, I will check that out. See if it's running smoothly on my roller test stand. I can't imagine a Lionel mogul with a binding issue... 😃

If the volume is sound is going high and low on its own, I would check the rheostat. Next the speaker. Have not had one go on the TMCC version...
