Jeff - use the #9 button (as the + button) to turn on smoke and #8 (as the - button) to turn it off.  By keeping your finger on the #9 button for about ten seconds, it superheats the smoke unit.

Hi Lyle,

I have this same engine still sitting in its box. When i first got it I was disappointed as well with poor smoke. lionel sent me a new replacement unit but still did not help. I suspect mine suffers from whatever ailment yours did.

Did lionel service ever tell you what the issue was and what they did to fix the problem?

regards,

Mack

Mack - per Mike Reagan at Lionel, I sent it in to have the original 27ohm resistor replaced with another 27ohm resistor, but one with a different wattage.  I have no idea what that means, but it worked .  Mike knew exactly what needed to be done. Cost me $20 plus shipping.
