I do not have the browser or OGR save my password. If I want to make a post I have to log in, otherwise I am a "guest". I wonder how many others are like me?

Finally, a post we can all get behind and support. Probably not as entertaining as "join TCA", the "what's wrong with York" threads, but I think it has potential.
I have my browser delete passwords, cookies, history, etc. when I close it. Always had it do that. Besides, keeps my brain active remembering all my complex passwords.
I've been on the internet for around forty years as a software developer... well before browsers when all activity was text based. There are very few sites as friendly, inviting, inclusive and *non-intrusive* as OGR. OGR is positively benign. I don't use Google, Facebook or Twitter and I use the Tor browser. It's certainly amusing to me when folks think they are being careful about their privacy... and then, do a google search.

I expect a lot of those are unsigned in members but many are not. I'd like to see them join up!
Marty... the number of guests who are members at any given moment is probably around 20%... a ratio of 10 to 1 guests to members is not uncommon for any site. 90% of those guests are more likely than not to be *regular* or re-visiting guests. They are certainly enjoying the site... we must be very entertaining! Come On Folks... Join Us!

If you can remember all of your complex passwords you are either (1) a genius, (2) doing it right or (3) not nearly on enough sites. I hope the answer is #1 or #2.
Why don't people sign on? Too many sites flood you with advertising or sell your information. The bad actors create the poor situation for the good actors. In all the years that I've been a member of this Forum, I have never had that experience. So I too would say, sign up, the water is fine. It certainly makes it a lot easier to communicate with Forum members and dig down a bit deeper when that is helpful.

I guess I never noticed the guests count before. Amazing number! I suppose the holiday season sees a spike because of so many people getting out their old trains for Christmas running, having issues, and the good old Internet leads them right here to OGR! 
I agree and that seems totally logical... however, the ratio is amazingly consistent at all calendar points through out the year. I've seen the guest count over 2K. The ratio does fluctuate at any given moment 5 to 1 - 20 to 1... 10 to 1 is just a rule of thumb.
One of the things that this site does relatively well is to act as an archival site for a lot of valuable information. Some of the very old stuff has suffered from the usual "bit rot", but for the most part a lot of great content remains available.
Sites that do this end up becoming targets for what the Search Engine Optimization gang call "organic search": Somebody will enter something like "Super-O track" into Google and this site will end up being one of the first entries in the search results. This is going to happen a LOT, and each one will result in an anonymous visitor. Some will get sucked into the site and become members, most will not.
This is a good thing. I think we should celebrate the mystery visitors, not worry about them.
After I got back into trains every google search led me here so joined up and never looked back.

I don't want to work that hard, not to mention visiting every website takes more time. I use LastPass to remember all the passwords, that way I only have to remember one, the LastPass password. If I'm not logged in, LastPass nicely fills the user name and password, and optionally also clicks the "login" button.
I have more than enough keeping my brain active with all the repairs, upgrades, new products, etc., I don't feel the need to exercise it remembering arcane passwords!

For those of you who aren't sure what Dennis means here, let me provide some additional information for you. When you do a Google search, Google sets a cookie (a small text file) on your computer. This cookie does several things:
- It keeps a record at Google of everything you have ever searched for
- It tracks every web site you visit and sends that information back to Google.
This is how they can show you "targeted" ads.- They sell this information to other sites for use in their advertising.
The solution is simple - don't use Google. I have all my browsers set to use Duck Duck Go for my search engine. Yes, it's a silly name, but they do not track you.

For those of you who are not as sharp as Ron with your passwords, there is another way. I use an app called Dashlane to safely store and manage all my passwords.
Dashlane can also set up a VPN (Virtual Private Network) for you from within the app. This truly makes you invisible on the net. My Dashlane app currently has 266 logins and passwords saved. I really don't need that many and could delete a few (the aviation sites, for example) but it's nice to know that these passwords are safely stored in an encrypted form on the Dashlane servers. Dashlane syncs between all my devices (a MAC, three PCs, an Ipad, and an IPhone) so no matter where I am I can log in to the secure sites I need to get into. For example, I logged into my stock broker account yesterday to take profits on a stock I owned, while sitting in the Jeep in the Kroger's parking lot waiting for The Lovely and Gracious Linda to finish grocery shopping.
One more point that should be mentioned about joining here. OGR will NEVER sell your email address or other personal information to anyone else for marketing and promotional purposes. OGR occasionally sends mass emails to all forum members, but it's not done often and only when there is some kind of important message for you.
I've said it before and it bears repeating...this forum is made up of a truly great group of people!
