Hi all, I need help please from you electrical experts

I have fitted a Lionel Smoke Unit 610-8057-200 to my dummy unit but the problem is that the 18V constant voltage is too high and I get much too much smoke

I was wondering how I might turn it down, I was thinking maybe adding a circuit in the dummy to reduce the track voltage to about 12V and wondered if this was about right

Any ideas?

Ted,

I'm thinking of putting the same smoke unit in my dummy and a B-unit, I'd love to see a pic of your set up, did you just connect the the pickup assembly, did this affect the output of your light?  What did you do to have the smoke go out the exhaust ports?

Mr. Black

I will post the final results when I get the smoke unit turned down

I have a small circuit board which I have made to regulate output at 3V and run the LED lights in the cab and also the running lights however when I designed it I took the full 18V track voltage out to the smoke unit. The Lionel smoke unit does have its own 5v regulator for the fan so that is OK however the element is getting too much and overheating, I suspect on the powered TMCC engine it is regulated as the smoke volume alters with the speed

The diode Roy suggested should be just the ticket.

One thing that might be an issue.  I haven't looked at the Lionel unit closely, but if they have a single diode for rectification for the circuit to run the fan, you may have to make sure the diode is in the correct orientation or the fan my not run.  If they used a bridge, that's not an issue.  The Lionel fan driven smoke unit in my parts box has a single diode, so it would have the problem.

Oh yes you can, especially on a quiet springtime Sunday morning when it activates your home security alarm system and the alarm company automatically notifies your local fire company who then appear at your residence with sirens blaring and lights flashing. Needless to say that even a volunteer firefighter who's also a train enthusiast would say, " THAT ENGINE SMOKES WAY TOO MUCH!" Originally Posted by mike w:
