OK, with the help of Stan2004, in another thread, I think that I have a plan for how to run Lionel Conventional and Lyon Chief, as well as MTH Remote Commander locomotives on the same track, and with one single power supply.
It seems that a conventional controller and a Remote Commander can not be connected to the track, live, at the same time, or in any configuration, for the MTH Remote Commander to work properly. So the fix would be to separate them via an DPDT switch.
This would be handled by running the power from the Z-1000 brick into the center pin of a DPDT switch, then to run that power from each of the top and bottom pins, on the same side of said switch, to either the conventional controller or the Remote Commander, and finally to run the power out of the controller and Remote Commander to the adjacent pins on the opposite side of said switch, then out from the center pin, on that same side, out to the track
Ground would simply be split, after coming out of the brick, and fed into each controller, then be fed back out of each controller, to be joined back together and out to the track.
This would allow power and ground to only make a circuit thru, either, the Z-1000 or the Remote Commander, but never both at the same time.
For this purpose, I have purchased 3 of these 20 amp 12-24 volt switches: Carling-Tech from Mouser, and I can use male and female (2.1mm x 5.5mm) barrel connectors with pigtails to make the connections for the Z-1000 and the Remote Commander without having to cut any of the cords from the brick itself.
Now, I will have 3 discreet track sections, and will control each of Tracks 1 & 2 with one side of a Lionel ZW-C (with two180 watt Power House bricks), and Track 3 with an MTH Z-1000 brick and controller.
However, I need to verify something with regard to the Lionel ZW-C feeder cord which doesn't use a barrel connector, but rather the proprietary, multiple pin connector, to plug into the ZW-C.
QUESTION - 1: Can I cut that cord, and run the power wire thru the DPDT switch, and back out, as detailed above, then split the ground, and connect the power out of the switch, and one of the split off grounds back to their respective leads on end that was cut originally, and then back to to the ZW-C? The other ground from the split would of course go to the Remote Commander, as detailed above.
This seems straight forward enough, but I thought I would ask the question.
QUESTION - 2: For 14 volts at 10 amps what gauge wire should I use?
