Traction Tire Help Please

2008 last time cataloged. Parts breakdown looks like the engine has to come apart when motor is unscrewed from the power truck. Side frames are fastened from above.

I'll take another look, but I didn't see a mounting screw on the underside.

Yep - I found that John.  Now I have to cut a couple of wires in order to gain enough slack!

You shouldn't have to cut any wires, take them off the top of the truck.

Older MTH trucks were the same way. Not only a PITA for replacing tires, but sometimes the truck sides just come loose and the truck has to be removed to re-tighten the screws. Sure glad they re-designed, because now with newer truck sides, the screws can be removed from the bottom. Once the truck sides are removed, I use a chrome plated, 1/2" drive Master Mechanic, short ratchet extension, to install the tires. The main reason I use the extension, is to prevent over stretching of the tire, when installing it. The diameter of the extension is the same as the wheel. Also, the stretching the tire does experience, is equal throughout its whole diameter, instead of in one or two areas a tire experiences when stretched on traditionally. Just hold the extension tightly against the wheel and slide the tire on. Just make sure you use a chrome plated extension or the tire is harder slide.

Installing traction tires on GG1's, diesels and even some steamers is no big deal with this tool.  I have used it and made them for people and one train shop.  GG1's take size 18 tires.  Take a look at the attached video.  You do NOT have to take the side frames off the truck.  With practice, it will be easy.

Hi Bruce - I found your post/video prior to asking the question here.  The issue with the GG1 is that there isn't enough room between the wheel and side-frame to slip the tire through.

Take a small straight blade screwdriver and make room, gently.
