Traction Tire Question

Lionel 763e 6-18056.

I'm changing the tires. This model includes a set of regular blank drivers (not-groved). Maybe I'll try running with them at some point and see what magna-traction without tires can do.

If there is no magnetic attraction between the drivers and the track, pulling power will decrease significantly. Traction tires were introduced to provide traction on all types of track.

Lionel tubular track works best with Magne-Traction. Other track, not as well or not at all.

If you don't have the grooved wheels, putting traction tires on them will certainly cause geometry issues with the wheels!  I'd consider trying Bullfrog Snot, though I'm not much of a fan of it.  It's advantage is it's a lot thinner and won't cause the issues with rocking on the traction tires.

Not only were Postwar inner drivers blank (no flanges), most (if not all) of them were of a slightly smaller diameter than the outer wheels. I am not positive, but this probably holds true for the inner blank wheels on postwar FM trucks.

I don't see how traction tires would stay on wheels that have no grooves or flanges, I'd think they'd be off in a couple trips around the layout.

I had a repairman show me a trick he does he uses a small dab of glue and coats it lightly on recessed area and then puts traction tires on so far 5 years running nary an issue of lost or loose traction tire on this locomotive since.
