Any thoughts on using a small amount of silicone rubber to afix a traction tire on a drive wheel? I have a set of MTH E3's, one powered loco pulling A/B dummies plus 8 more cars. I am guessing the traction tires are worn out, even though they are not broken or alligatored, but just keep slipping off the wheels. I just found a similar set on youtube also pulling 10 cars including the A/B dummies, so guessing these tires are just stretched out a bit. Any experience out there on just how many cars a single powered engine will pull on the straight and level when the consist is all modern wheel sets?

I use Eastman 910 / CA / SuperGlue.
I replace traction tires with silicone sealant. I can show you how. If interested, my email is in my profile.

I would go with Doug's plan from Laid Off Sick, When they stretch out and come off the wheel. Time to replace. If I do not have the tire in stock, I take it to my local LHS, Ulmer does it along with a cleanup, oil and tire at a very reasonable price.
Unless they are cemented on. Then they are good again.

x2. A couple of drops of Crazy Glue (Gel Type) will keep those things in place for a very long time. I don't know why they don't come this way or come vulcanized to the wheel like Flyer did it back in the day.

Because when they get really old they get hard and are just as good as the steel wheels. And then being glued on or part of the wheel you can't replace them and now have a worthless locomotive that can't pull it's own weight. My AF steamer is a victim of this issue and can barely pull 4 cars on a flat straight. Oh how I wish I could replace traction tires on it.
To the OP, just replace them with new tires, the cost and headache isn't worth trying to save/reuse them.
Thanks for the input. The tires still snap onto the wheels with no slop, may try an adhesive. Can't believe a glue on tire is not removable though, a dental pick, sharp knife and a Dremel wire wheel would seem to be the answer to getting any adhesive off the metal wheel.
Sometimes tires last a few days. Sometimes a few months. That is on my favorite GP 9 pulling 25 or 30 cars. Now that I said that the next time I run the tires will probably come off. This set has been on for months. Running 8 cars my tires seem to last a long time. Some I have never replaced. The more cars the quicker the seem to come off.
Acitone nail polish remover on a Q Tip will remove the super glue from the tire groove, but be careful not to get any on the paint since it will remove it too.

While CA/Super Glue seems somewhat permanent, it has excellent tensile strength, but poor shear strength, allowing you to remove or replace the tires quite easily by breaking/chipping off the old tire & glue quite easily.
