Short answer is no....   The tas units have a heat sensor that sits right next to the smoke resistor that shuts the heat off when it senses heat. you can  try bending it away slightly so the resistor gets hotter.

 

you should be able to tap the boiler cover plate off the front of the engine to reveal the unit and slide it out through the front if its a boiler type engine.

A TAS smoke unit in an Atlas diesel.  Fan driven, the blue thing is the low fluid level sensing device.  Large black resistor is the heat source.  Keep in mind that the set up is designed to inhibit smoke resistor burn out. So if you move the temperature sensor too far away from the smoke resistor, you may be defeating it's purpose.
