Hi all,

I am trying to add some complexity to our train layout for my older boy (7) he is past looper stage, my little who is 4 is still fine with it.

I'm looking for suggestions on how to integrate some more realistic operation for him to operate. I know that freight and passengers have to go somewhere, but I'm maybe looking more for a little more of a puzzle or game for us to play. We are primarily running DCS and a Lionchief Plues Engine, so command control to make things a bit easier to run.

I don't unfortunately have a track plan or layout map available, but I do have pictures to give an idea on what our setup looks like. Thank you for any suggestions feedback or prebuilt games.

Thanks!!

I have 4 "Areas" on our layout that I can see us moving things to and from. Any suggestions for would be appreciated.

Engine yard:

Freight Staging yard:

Hotwaterville which is on the West side of the layout which is where most of the people of the town live:

And then there is the harbor, couple of factories as well as a dock yard where ships can come in.:

I’ve developed a fairly simple excel based train operations game to play with my similarly aged son.

At the beginning of each game, you get a random scenario of commodity freight rates per rail car type, and a random required number of mainline laps to complete in order to generate the revenue.

There are limits to the number of total cars in the train(10 or less), and a requirement to have different types of cars (must have 3 different car types).

Essentially, the game is to build your train with the highest revenue generating loads and complete the laps under the time limit.

I also built in random costs to operate steam vs diesel so you can choose the lower cost locomotive to maximize net income.

Overall, I think it’s fun because it has an element of luck (random scenarios), but requires some thought behind which loads you would like to deliver, and skill to physically operate the trains.

I had plans to build it out in a web based version so you could keep score against yourself or friends, but haven’t gotten back to it.

If you’re interested, I can email you the excel file to try it out to see if you like it.
