Hello,

Our basement finish is coming to the paint stage and we are deciding on colors for the train room. It is about an 18 x31' room  with (18) 4" incandescent can lights.

I can't imagine there is a right answer but I thought I would throw the question out there and see what I come with?

Best Regards,

What timing! We have the Sherwin Williams Color chart here now. Although I am not crazy about Blue I mentioned to my wife that seems to be the popular color. It make the most sense though when you think about it.

Hey, nice job on the train photography. Those are some pictures to be proud of for sure. My 5 year old just said "can we go there"?

I've decided to go with the painted sky and clouds approach. I've picked a vibrant cobalt blue for the top half of the sky, and intend to blend in white as I work my way to layout level.

My question is: What do I do for below the layout? I realize that for most of the time, people will never see it. But I'll know it is there. I have modules against the walls on 3 sides of the room. The 4th side is open, ceiling to floor.

I'm thinking perhaps of using a dark or forest green, especially on the open side. I could keep going all the way around the room, or maybe I should go with white, since that is what will be close to the layout. Your thoughts?

I made the mistake of advocating for a dark color when painting over wallpaper in an old house...and got a dark room.  I'd suggest white below an area that is not part of the scenery, for except for night effects when you turn down the lighting, the most

light reflective color for the most visibility seems right to me.

DenverO mentioned "can" incandescent lights....I was thinking flourescent...pros and

cons?  I know in photography you get a different color casts...how about in the

train room?  (and now they babble about LED's?)

I also struggled with paint color when building the trainroom. I did want a blue, but what shade. You get mindboggled looking at the color swatches, and wow.....they usually come out looking a lot different once applied to a large wall area. My room is about 16'x22', and I have 8 double tube recessed flourescent lights, as well as another 8 track lights on dimmers, which work well for more of a "softer" look.

I purchased my paint from a store chain we have called, oddly enough "Canadian Tire", similar to a "Lowes" or "Home Depot", minus the lumber part. Anyway it was their store brand paint called "Roccoco Blue", which I don't know if it is a standard color available from other brand name paints or not.

I'm very happy the way it turned out. Ended up a nice "Mid" tone blue, which to me seems to closely resemble a "sky" color. I hope to someday find someone with artistic skills a lot better than mine, and have distant hills and clouds painted directly on  the walls. Nothing with a lot of detail, just something to add a little depth.

Here's a couple of pics showing the early construction, and later with the layout, still far from completed.
