Don't forget Cool Trains in Salunga, PA. That's just a short jog west of Lancaster on PA 283. You should call before you go to make sure of the hours.

Hey Mark ... you may want to consider becoming a subscriber since we have an extensive list of train shops in the magazine and there you may find one near you or where you are traveling.

That is what I was going to say. I live close and love this place. Lots of used O gauge in nice condition, well organized, and prices are generally good. If you're looking for high end legacy or the newest cutting edge trains there is not much of that. The owner is personable and very honest, so I like to support him when I can. George made a great suggestion to call in advance.
Thanks Rick. I lived in Hershey and Hummelstown for 18 years. Watched a wealth of train stores dwindle down to a few. Really sad. But as you say, Ted (owner of Cool Trains) is a good guy and deserves the support of local hobbyists.
The other suggestion I would make is Draude's Derailment in Lebanon, PA. Haven't been there in ages, so I'd call for their hours as well.
Best,
George
Iron horse hobby house, 6th Street, downtown Reading PA. This is the store I grew up on.
Also, although I have never been there, All Aboard Railroad. A layout display and hobby shop run by Bart's Pneumatic Corporation
York is within an hour of Lancaster, so White Rose Hobbies might be worth your time. Also, The Station in New Cumberland (West Shore of Harrisburg) - smaller store in an old train station, but then 15-20 mins more to the Enola Yards and Rockville Bridge.

If you opt for White Rose, there are a couple more shops in Hanover, PA not far from York:
Iron Horse Trains -- This store is inside an antique co-op that often has other train related items in various sellers booths.
Toy Trains Unlimited -- 38 York St Hanover, PA 17331 (no website, but you can find them on Google/Yelp/etc.)
With any of them, research their hours or call ahead as hours of operation can vary wildly from shop to shop.

I'll second the mention of Drauds Derailment on main street in Lebanon. Vast knowledge of all things model trains, huge inventory. Sets up at all the train shows between Philly and York. John is a great guy. Very large train store.
Choo Choo Barn and the Strasburg Train Shop highly recommended

Those ive been to.
For a couple more suggestions, if you go to Nicholas Smith (awesome store!), you are just a little over a half hour from Hennings Trains, and Just Trains is just a little over an hour from Lancaster.
I've been to all but a couple of these shops, and some multiple times, and they were all worthwhile.

I have been to Silunga a couple of times. Glad to see others in area l missed. Wish l could print this posting.
Wish somebody would print out a list of these and leave copies at the Sheraton? or other open shows at York. Although, l have found some closed during York week.

Consider it done.
Mark,
Salunga is a good place to watch trains. The PRR/AMTK main runs parallel to Route 283, between Rohrerstown Road and Spooky Nook Road exits, where I used to pace the GG1s on the Broadway Limited, when they both still existed. I never got a speeding ticket but that was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

Isn't Hennings about 2 hours away?

Thanks...I am on the lookout!

Hennings would be about 1.5 hours from Lancaster. I was just pointing out that, if visiting Nicholas Smith, which is roughly an hour and 15 minutes from Lancaster, that Hennings is a short drive from there.

Yes, there are two shops in Hanover. Toy Trains Ltd is right in town at the York St. address. Iron Horse is inside the Yesteryear Antique Center at the Pine St. address.
