Head south to Santa Cruz, thee Roaring Camp and Redwood Railroad is worth while.
The Train Shop in San Jose.
The Winchester Mystery House nearby the The Train Shop.
Roaring Camp Railroad in Felton.
Niles Canyon Railroad in Fremont to Sunol.
Caltrain to San Francisco from San Jose.
ACE train to Stockton from San Jose.
Amtrak to Sacramento from San Jose.
California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento - take the Capital Corridor train there and back.
About an hour & a half's drive Northeast of San Jose (depending on the time of day, lol) is the Niles Canyon Railway which does excursions including steam. It's also the home of SP #9010, the only known surviving and truly unique Krauss-Maffei Diesel-Hydralic ML 4000 locomotive and has been cosmetically restored (although not yet able to run under its own power last I heard).
