I saw this on another forum and thought I would share it here. State about how many locos you have, how many you actively run the most, and how many you would get rid of.

1. I have around 32 locos in my roster

2. I run maybe 10

3. I would get rid of a few of my less detailed and primitive models such as one of my E60CH’s.

I only have 10 or 12 0 gauge locomotives. I don’t run any of them enough, but I run all of them some.

I have only tried to sell two of them. I sold the Thomas and Friends set, but I received no interest in the RMT Beefs and Peeps. Keeping them won’t hurt me, they’re pretty cool, but I could use the space.

I have sold a lot of my HO stuff, as well as some 0 rolling stock that I picked up when I bought out a flea marketer.

Tastes change.

I have more trains than most, about 70 engines and 600 cars. All are displayed around the basement, all find layout time.

I cant fit anymore. Periodically I look at the collection with one thought in mind: If I saw that item for sale today would I buy it? If the answer is "No" up for sale it goes to make room for something else.

The collection has changed from about 50-50 Postwar and Modern Lionel to about 70% Postwar, 5% PreWar, 5% Standard Gauge and the rest Modern era.

My struggle is trying to "float" 3 different scales modeling wise.  gauge one outdoors(soon to have gauge 0 as well), gauge 0 tinplate/scaleplate indoors(and outdoors) and a bit of HO.  The HO is mostly trains from my childhood that run poorly.  But I found mint examples to put in my display case for the memories they bring back.   The O gauge tinplate/scaleplate has a UK focus and I am just getting started on that one.   My G/gauge one has been greatly pared down in the recent months to just a couple G scale locos and cars, and the focus moved to UK gauge one modeling.   Only thing on the get rid of, is an Aster live steam V&T Reno in gauge one, along with two Marklin tinplate coaches that go with her.  Hopefully in the next couple days, she will be sold.     Mike the Aspie

Lessee, I sold 3 Lionel NW2s and a GG1 using Facebook Marketplace. That leaves me with 3 Lionel NW2s, 2 Lionel F3s (one of which I built/kit-bashed) and 3 Lionel GP7s (two of which Rio Grande units I built/kit-bashed). Oh, and 2 MTH PS3 SW1500s are my workhorses. One SW1500 and one F3 suffice for the Plywood Empire Route and run every day. The rest sit in boxes. Three Lionel aluminum Rio Grande cars run every day with the F3 and about 30 MTH freight cars are on the pike in constant use.

Once I acquire a third MTH SW1500 I may sell the 3 NW2s.

If I were starting from zero I would buy 3 MTH PS3 SW1500s and MTH rolling stock. That would be it. From zero I might buy Ross/Gargraves instead of Fastrack.

One thing I do seem to collect is Pullmor motors :

Is this a new concept, 'to sell'?

I do not believe I have heard that term before.

I guess I went to the same school. If I buy something, it generally stays bought, and goes on the layout to be run.

I still have some things I haven't taken out of their boxes yet, but that is simply a logistical issue, as I need to have room to work on ballasting and scenery, and it's easier to keep them stored away for now.

1) Have more than enough locomotives and rolling stock. All good and all scale-sized. I have only one small postwar engine that I bought just to have an authentic Lionel piece that was "Made in USA," as were the trains I had as a youngster in the 1950s.

2) Actively run about 25 engines - several older MTH PS1, mostly newer MTH, also a few each Atlas, Sunset, Lionel. I run a few large electric locomotives but prefer mostly small to medium-sized steam and diesels.

3) Never sell anything. I like everything that I bought. Why sell it for a lower price? Makes no sense to replace it with a more expensive new one of the same prototype - even if the new model sounds are a little better, has command control or whistle steam...

Silly me! And here I thought I had TOO MANY trains! Which is about 10 locomotives in HO, On30, O and Large Scale. I actually do run most of them, sometimes one or two scales at the same time. Hmmm.... I have a 9 x 15 around the walls shelf and all kinds of track but I never seem to get around to scenery. I love to listen to the diesels and watch the mechanisms of the steam engines. I love to blow the horns, so bigger is better in that regard.

I've got some old stuff, for sure, but I think I'd give it to Goodwill rather than try to sell it. That's not going to happen any time soon, though perhaps more from inertia than philosophy!

I have "gotten rid" of all my F units and articulated trainsets that had tethers.  Tethers and myself do NOT play well together.  All the PS1 locos are either sold or made into dummy units.  The remainder of my collection of locomotives would be difficult for me to sell.  And, there is not a single toylike piece of rolling stock left (120 cars -136 car lengths)… mostly Atlas Masterline or Trainman, and Pecos River Brass.

I have had enormous success selling unwanted items at our annual Club Show in Grapevine, TX.

There are 26 steam locomotives, 4 electric locomotives, 2 El trains and several trolley cars on my railroad. Sets that I do not run are the Rail King PS1 Ski Train, Santa Fe, Texas Special and New Haven diesels.

My goals is convert the Ski Train 4-6-2 to PS3. The Santa Fe Chief Set, the Texas Special Set and New Haven diesels will be trade items for more Rail King steamers. I see a Clinchfield Challenger in my future!

I really like most of my trains. It's not that I dislike one engine, it was just a mistake for me to buy it. As many of you know I love electric locos. A few years ago I missed out on the MTH Little Joe demo engine when it was first offered. I have two Milwaukee scale little Joes and MTH box cabs among others. I model the summer of 1953 but when MTH released the demo loco again I bought it. Never ran it. I realized the demo would have never run as late as 53 and it would look silly running with Joes in the Milwaukee colors. So I'm selling cheap. It's a beautiful heavy engine but I'm staying with the year 1953. DonDSC_0531

I have 12 locomotives, 8 diesel and 4 steam. One steam locomotive does not currently run, as I have to PS3 convert it. 28 passenger cars, and 32 freight cars. Everything fits on my layout. I don't keep anything in boxes and I didn't build shelves. I've bought everything to run. So I don't plan on selling anything soon.

I have sold a couple items to replace them with closer to scale items. Last year I sold a Railking GS2 Northern and replaced it with a Premier GS4 Northern. This year I sold an ABA set of Williams Alco PAs and replaced them with a ABA set of Lionel Alco PAs. I have sold some items but only because I wanted some closer to scale items to replace them.

Several years ago I stopped buying everything just because and shifted to some degree of focus.  Then we had the momentary loss of ERR which now has led me to sell and continue to sell most of my conventional locos.  Still have a few that I will convert, the rest will go away.  25 power units on the roster, 5 of which are dummies.  11 are tmcc, 5 are slated for conversion, the remainder will remain conventional.  One trolley just because plus 2 PCC cars.  A sufficient number of passenger cars to mimic a commuter operation and sufficient freight cars for the layout.  My motto is if it sits in a box under the table it goes.  There is always that bit of remorse as you let it go, that passes with the first beer after you receive the funds.  So far no regrets.
