Hi There,

I have a small six by six layout in the basement of a family member.  Right now I am using a Lionel CW-80 transformer.  It was fine to power a modern era engine, three lamp posts, and two illuminated stations.  But not enough for the postwar berkshire set I just got.  I went in the attic and got my MTH Z-750 brick, but could not find the throttle that goes with it.  I did find an LTI throttle from lionel.  It is black with the red, white, and blue Lionel logo from the era.  It has a direction button, and a whistle button.  No bell.  It has a throttle that spins from OFF to FULL SPEED.  It says Chesterfield, MI on the bottom.  There is a jack on the back where the female connector from the brick plugs in.  If I remember correctly, we just plugged it into the wall years ago, though.

My question is this:

1) Can I use this throttle in conjunction with the MTH brick?

2) Does The Z-750 have more power than the CW-80?

3) Does it have enough power to run my 1950 Berkshire with a few Lamp posts?

Thanks for taking the time to look at this --- I'd like to know if it's workable before I make the drive.

The Z-750 is very similar in capacity to the CW-80, though it might just be better with that locomotive.  Hard to imagine you need more than 75-80 watts for one locomotive.  Does it run with no other load on the transformer?  Why not run the lights from the secondary transformer?

As far as using the Lionel throttle on the Z-750 brick, it probably should work if it's like the other Lionel separates.  The brick that comes with the Lionel throttles is just a bare transformer, and I believe that's what your MTH brick is also.

Knowing how well Lionel & MTH have played together in the past, and knowing how the "not invented here' syndrome is between different companies, it sure gives me pause that a Lionel controller will just plug into another companies power source and operate without issues. If you knew that the Lionel controller plug was wired exactly like the MTH controller plug, then you might have a chance.

I doubt you will smoke the MTH brick, but you stand a chance of damaging the Lionel controller if the wiring isn't compatible.
