Im not sure if this is the right forum to post this but i have a question about transformers.  I have the polar express R2R set and am on my sencond transformer.  the first one stop working all together.  i only set up this set around the holidays when i went to set up this set this year the transformer is making a weird humming noise that it didnt make last year.  is there anyway to get this serviced or should i buy a new transformer?  If i go the route of buying a new transformer what one should i get?  currently i am just running around a simple boring oval.  i have no switches or accessories hooked up to my layout, but next year i am thinking of adding switches and some elevated sections.

If it's the CW-80, Lionel doesn't service them.  I know if you open it up and put a drop of oil on the fan shaft, the noise will all but go away.  My LHS does that, and I have one that is whisper quiet and works great.  I have 3 more that need it, but haven't done it yet.
As for replacements, there are several options.  The MTH Z-1000 is a good replacement and gives a bit more power.

If it's a CW80 -- thats what came with my Lionel PE set last year -- there is a known fan issue. That's the noise you are hearing. I have two CW80's and the fans have gone bad on both. The symptom is an awful howling on start up that eventually goes away. You may want to check the forum archives for more info but my guess is if you return you'll just go thru the same thing again unless Lionel has fixed the issue on later models and you can get one of those.

MTH makes 50 watt (Z500), 75 watt (Z750) and 100 watt (Z1000) units. Price is reasonable, they are easy to use and no fan.
