I recently purchased an Atlas Trainman 2 rail RS-3 DC powered switcher. It seem's the more I run it, more grease work's it's way out of the truck block. While I have the trucks off for a clean out, I'd like to reroute the pick up wiring attached to the top of the truck. When they were assembled, the wire terminals were twisted badly causing the wires to chafe against the openings in the frame. I removed the motor mount screw from the bottom of the truck (like on an MTH engine) and thought this would release it. Guess again. Still rock solid, on both trucks.

Then I removed the 4 screws holding the bottom cover to the truck block and can't even get this off to see if there's a hidden screw somewhere else. The whole power truck assembly is mounted to the frame with 4 small screws, but the way the wiring is connected by the lighting board, removing these won't release the truck far enough to get at the screw heads holding the wires.

These pieces were assembled, so that mean's they can be dis-assembled! Anybody have any ideas? Also, I'd like to download a parts diagram of this particular engine, but seeing as it's Atlas's cheaper line, I don't think I'll see this happening. The Atlas website is of no help.

I'm not familiar with this particular engine, but on other Atlas engines that have similarly vexed their owners, one has to remove a screw from the top of the truck block. And yes that means removing the shell so you can access the screw, usually through the slot through which the pick up wires run. Be forewarned that this opens the gearbox and the wheelsets and other parts fall out. Note where every thing goes for re-assembly. Ingenious design, isn't it? RM

If that's a typical vertical-can "china drive" there should be a screw roughly in the centerline of the truck that connects it to the motor. It's about a 3mm phillips head machine screw about 10mm long. The truck should drop off. When re-installing it, the motor will want to back away into the shell, so all you have to do is turn the axles and it will pull the worm gear and motor into the truck so you can screw it back on.

I'll pull out one of my RS1's and double check when I get home tonight.
