I am an occasional DCS user. I do a large layout at Christmas for my Grandaughter and neighbor kids. My DCS handheld controller has a version 3.10. Yes I need to update the tiu  to the current version.

My grandaughter asked for her own handheld controller. My local hobby shop has a handheld controller in stock but it has current software installed. Will that controller work with my current tiu software? My assumption is it won't without updating.

Is that correct?

rc,

Having had some wild experiences with mismatches DCS components I recommend you have somebody upgrade both DCS units with the latest changes as soon as you can.  If you are going to use the new hand held with your old TIU, give your granddaughter the hand held, that matches your TIU to control trains with.  You use the updated one, and carefully read each segment before pressing the wheel to activate your trains, if you see any super high voltage numbers, on your hand held screen, especially in your TR TIU mode, do not touch the wheel, shut down the hand held & TIU, restart them from scratch, when this happens.  This usually resets the TIU to a controllable situation, and the hand held then functions correctly.  Using mismatched DCS units can definitely lead to run away Conventional Trains, be careful and upgrade your DCS units as soon as you can.
