Elmer's Gantry started out as a bad pun on the "What Did You Do Today" thread...but thinking about it,  I decided to see how far I could take the concept.

Elmer's Gantry was built to be readily dismantled.

First, the posts were lengthened.

Next, new crossbeam supports were cut and notched.

GEDC1357

The gantry is now taller.

Next up:  Operating rails.  Keeping with the popsicle stick theme,  I decided to cut down a couple of Marx straight tracks and screw them to popsicle stick ties.

Before and after.

GEDC1360

Both sections complete.

GEDC1361

Running wheels:  Lionel freight car wheels from the junk box.

GEDC1362

To make things completely ridiculous,  I drove in brass bushings.

GEDC1363

Wheels and cross braces installed.   Total build time,  including glue drying,  about three hours.

This is as far as I plan to go with the concept.   More of an impressionistic build than anything else,  done to scratch a creative itch.

Enjoy!  Hope this inspires you!

Mitch

That's really creative thought. I have a ton of Popsicle sticks of many different flavors and other assorted small pieces of wood left over from when the grand kids were much smaller. I may have to consult Fortescue for some more design ideas here.

Train show here in 2 weeks...I need to start buying some old junker train cars and things for the extra parts. I have an extremely small parts box of left over train stuff that needs to be properly filled up.
