Now how is a rubber band going to stop the contact with the center rail with the pickup shoe for the coupler?

Good point, I was thinking of the standard magnetic couplers, OOPS!

For this issue, I'd probably consider disconnecting the wire to the shoe.

In addition to what GRJ advises, which obviously will work, I recall hearing some using a less-invasive temporary fix by applying some electrical tape to the underneath of the shoe to act as an insulator, thereby preventing the unintended triggering of the couplers.

Get your head down to track level and roll the car by hand over the switch. Observe where the rivet in the shoe contacts the center rail of the switch, and put a piece of electrical tape on the switch at that point.

Oh yes, TrainLarry's suggestion was another I've read about using electrical tape, completely forgot about that as well, thanks for triggering my memory Larry!

I don't have many of these couplers on my equipment, but what I have done is used some silicone (not a glob), slipped under the perimeter of the shoe. Hold the shoe up against the plate with a weight or masking tape, etc., overnight.

This is invisible, essentially, and reversible without damage.

Try nail polish.

Adding a thin shim of cardboard under the pheonlic plate on the shoe will lift it up slightly to ride over the switch, but will still work on an uncoupling track.
