Gilroy: Collision on railroad tracks leaves one dead
GILROY -- A Gilroy man was killed after his car collided with another vehicle cleaning railroad tracks Friday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Around 12:58 p.m., Lindberg Thompson was driving a 2013 Spiker Lager, a Union Pacific railroad maintenance car, southbound on railroad tracks that run parallel to Monterey Road in Gilroy, according to CHP Officer Herb Kellogg. A 54-year-old man driving a 2008 Toyota Tacoma westbound along Masten Avenue and then turned left onto the railroad tracks, colliding with the Spike Lager, Kellogg said.
The Toyota overturned, pinning the unidentified driver underneath. Though paramedics and fire crews were able to extricate the man, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
CHP officers do not know what led to the crash and Masten Avenue remains closed between Monterey Road and Manna Way with no estimated time of reopening.
Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash, Kellogg added. Drivers can expect delays in the area.

My questions is ......If not being flagged, are these type of cars on restricted speed and required to blow a warning when approaching grade crossings? Do these vehicles activate crossing signals?
