I have updated the Lionel D-291 Display Layout with Fastrack, and have added three connections not present in the original layout, which adds additional routes and fun. The elevated loop is On30 instead of another O-gauge loop in the original D-291.
The plan shows the Fastrack dwarf turnout signals of Fastrack turnouts, with standard block signals protecting the junctions and crossings.
The "Dispatcher's Joy" Game:
For one dispatcher and two engineers running trains of one engine and five cars (or with a third engineer running the On30 loop). Using command control for the trains: LionChief, Legacy, or DCS.
The object: for the dispatcher, to keep trains running, controlling the turnouts and signals protecting the crossings and junctions, changing routes without collisions or "emergency stops".
For the engineers: to watch for signals and route changes, avoid collisions, and blow the horn/whistle for crossings.
Easy Game Routing 1: Running the outside and inside loops. Can be played clockwise or counter-clockwise: Start out slow and gradually increase trains speeds.
Game Level 2: Running Routing 2 using the Outside Loop and the Inside Figure-8 of the original D-291: Can be run clockwise or counter-clockwise.
Game Level 3: Both Routing 1 and 2, with the dispatcher varying the routes. Can be run clockwise or counter-clockwise.
Game Level 4: Routing Level 3: The "Snake" Reversing Route.
Game Level 5: Combine all three routings, with the dispatcher varying the routes.
Game Level 6: Add the remaining reversing loop route (from the junction at right around the mountain and back) mixed with the other three routings.
This layout and game will keep three folks busy for hours! Everyone can take turns learning the dispatcher role, as everyone begins to learn the patterns and mixing of train routes.
