I have an old (1946) 726 Lionel Berkshire in fairly good condition. The smoke unit on it was the early design that used a large smoke bulb as the generator element. This smoke unit was the original design that does not work with the current day smoke pills or fluids. Lionel used Ammonium Nitrate pills in it to produce smoke. While it did produce smoke it was found that this chemical was not only very corrosive it is highly flammable. It is still available but DO NOT USE under any circumstance  Ammonium Nitrate. It is hazardous, dangerous and can destroy your equipment if not yourself. Having said that I am looking for a way to change over to a modern smoke generator or find a commercially made smoke fluid that will work in the early 726 smoke mechanism. Anyone have any ideas that might work?

If you're handy with making train repairs, you could probably retrofit a Lionel 610-8057-200 fan driven liquid smoke unit available from boxcarbill at his website at www.mttponline.com. You would have to design a mounting bracket  for the new smoke unit. Also, you can install a chuff switch with wheel magnets along with a super chuffer board from Henning's Trains to get puffing smoke if desired. I would search this site for the topic "upgrading Lionel smoke units" as this topic has been covered extensively on this forum.

Lionel made conversion kits for both the Berkshire (726S) and the Turbine (671S). While the kits are collectable in their own right, and are therefore hard to find / expensive, you can purchase all the parts to make the conversion yourself.

I hope you will save the parts you take out. There are people who would be happy to have them :}

I have done this! I left the original paddle that created the 'wind" for the bulb unit on the frame, attached a newer,(old style) smoke unit on the frame using the existing mounting bracket for the bulb type unit, and simply placed the smoke piston on top of the paddle! I had to bend it a bit(the paddle) to allow for smooth operation, but it has worked for about 20 or so years! Good luck!

Have fun, Uncle Al
