OK you threw an edit...
You need a PC with a serial port running LSU version 2 software, a 9 pin serial cable and the download from Lionel.
You can find the software all here.
or someone with the Base and Cab upgrade modules.
Eric of Eric's Trains has an excellent video explaining the process...
Thanks Marty.
Can you purchase the base and cab modules?

Check with Charles Ro. I believe they sold them in the past.
I don't know if you can buy the modules, but you should be able to find someone that can write some for you.
If you need the writable black modules, check this thread: Free Black Modules for Legacy
Here's a YT link showing how to upgrade Legacy Firmware to 1.60/1.61. Hope this helps.
Thanks guys. I haven’t yet watched the videos. Is there an easy way to see what version of the software I currently have?
Ben
Push the CTC button.
Ok. Apparently I did update it along the way, as currently it shows cab v1.60 and base v1.60.
so I need to upgrade the cab to v1.61?

Cab version 1.61 was released to cover some issues with the Legacy sensor boxcars. If you don't have a sensor boxcar I wouldn't worry about it.
Awesome thanks very much Marty.
Wasn't aux 3 in there too?
Pretty sure AUX3 was in the 1.60 release.

Yes, I'm pretty sure Aux 3 was in the 1.60 Base and Cab. The 1.61 for the Cab2 fixed the sensor car issue.
