Bought an old MTH C&O Baldwin M-1 off eBay several months back. Seems to run & smoke well, though sounds don't work. IIRC I read somewhere that the speakers can go over time. I've also heard that engines like this one can be upgraded to PS2 to give it command control capabilities.

Was interested from hearing from those that have done this. Is it fairly straightforward? Any pitfalls or issues to expect? Worth the cost? Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.  Thanks.

My two cents...  I'd say it's worth the cost, can't remember the last time MTH produced that engine in premier.  If the do make it again, it would retail around 1200.00.  That is, IF your model is the premier model, and I'm guessing yes from those pix.  Upgrading runs around 350.00 give or take, if done by most techs.  Some charge less, some more.

Upgrading it to PS2 wouldn't be difficult, other than the boards are scarce, as it would have plenty of room for the electronics.  Haven't done anything yet with PS3 so can't answer to that.

If you just want to get the sounds back, I'm sure a speaker can be had, if that's all it needs.

Impressive....

Thanks, guys!  It is a Premier engine, # 20-3042-1.  I hadn't heard about the PS3 upgrade, just the PS2.  It may be a bit before I'm able to get it done, but I most likely will.  As John said, it's a unique piece, and I'd certainly like to maximize its function once I get my layout built.  I guess it's just a waiting game on the boards....

Until then I can occupy myself with whether or not I'll try to find a set of the MTH Chessie passenger cars to buy that go with it, or consider other C&O cars.
