Today being December 7th, I was surprised there was not a post or mention about what happened 71 years ago today.

To keep this a train related post, attached is a photo of a Vulcan steam locomotive built in 1913 for the US Naval Shipyard, Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii.

And on a current note, I spoke today with an RMT customer whose late father was at Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. Stationed on the USS Portland. a heavy cruiser, his dad's ship sailed from Pearl Harbor on December 5th enroute to Midway. By not being in Hawaii, 2 days later, is perhaps the reason his dad survived the war and in turn he, as his son, talked to me today.

Thanks to all our veterans.

I heard on the Mike Huckabee Radio show that a US Navy tug that was at Pearl Harbor on December 7th is now in North Little Rock, Arkansas. This tug assisted in moving the USS Vestle (sp?) away from the burning battleship USS Arizona, helped push the USS Nevada out of the harbor entrance channel allowing damaged battleship to ground itself off of Hospital point, and finally the tug assisted in the fire fight effort on the USS West Virginia. I think it is the only ship that is left that was at Pearl Harbor on December 7th.

I had a chance to visit Peal Harbor back in 1987. It was a very moving experience to see the USS Arizona Memorial and the rest of Battleship Row. The names of each battleship was painted on the mooring blocks identifying the location of each ship. I also was able to see the USS Missouri during that visit. She was on her shake down cruse after being re commissioned. Now the USS Missouri is docked across form the Arizona Memorial and forms the “book ends of WWII”

I sure would like to go back again one of these days.

Richard
