With Lionel, you can look at Greenberg's to get an idea on what a good or bad price might be, but with MTH, how do you decide?  I would like to buy a UP set of aluminum passenger cars, a set that sold for 375 brand new, apparently went to 400MSRP before being discontinued, and the best deal I can find so far is 388.  I don't want to sound cheap on an offer, but I don't want to get fleeced either.  I do look at the purchase history, and the majority of the time, those sets that are still not sold have prices way above what they have sold for, so guessing a lot of folks check that data and don't want to get fleeced either.  Is there a hold out rule of thumb for MTH, or it all boils down to what is available and how bad you want it?

Yes, for all brands. Everything is worth whatever someone is willing  to pay for it.

Generally speaking trains have gone up the last few years with overall production of new items being cut back and/ or limited.

With Mth being a scaled back custom run manufacturing model. There are some great items that will likely never be made again.

It is all supply and demand on the used market.    It boils down to how badly you want the model vs the price.    No matter what  you pay,  you are NOT getting fleeced if you want the model bad enough to pay that for it.    On the other hand if you are only moderately interested, then the price becomes much more a factor.

Sometimes you just run into targets of opportunity.   someone just wants to sell something so badly they offer it at a price  you can't refuse, even if your interest is very light.     I have a fun and interesting purchase like that at a train show some  years ago.    I walked by a table in the afternoon and everything had slowed down.    There was a brass caboose on the table painted a robin's egg blue and lettered for Wabash.    The price was about 100 I think.     I looked at it and the lines were very familiar so I asked the seller if it was a PRR NDA caboose.    The guy smiled sheepishly and said yes it was and asked if I was interested.   My interest was pretty mild.   However, this was a very nicely detailed Carworks model.    I told him not really, it would be too much work to strip and repaint and he said make an offer.    I was thinking at most I would pay 50 for it and he would never consider that since he was asking 100, so I said I didn't want to make an offer and thanked him and started to walk away.    I got about 2 steps when he said, would you take it for 50!     I started laughing and agreed to that.    It was a really good deal at that price.

I don't know if you are still looking for the MTH UP set, or what set you are interested in. I'm getting ready to sell off some of my trains at the local show next month, including my MTH 5 car passenger set and the add on 2 car set.

Contact me off line and I'll tell you what I have. Willing to work out a deal if it's what you want.
