RJR is correct and it works very very well also. The Z4K with the side receiver opens up some way cool running options, this is detailed in Barry's DCS O Gauge Companion. I have a side receiver on both my Z4K's.
We made our fixed channels into variable channels by running all the power from our ZW-C with 4 bricks through the TIU. We dial up the voltage from the bricks with the Cab1/2 so the TIU only outputs whatever voltage you put in. Works the same, but of course you have to power the TIU with an aux power supply.
You can also power DCS locos/units with a TPC 300/400 in conventional mode. There is a programming sequence and instruction for the keys on a handheld Cab 1 controller.
