I don't see any picture of the springs at all try again!
Alan
looked at the Lionel Parts for the VLBB and I think the spring(S) are:
6101434932 | SPRING 3/32" DIAM x 9/32" HGHT x .015" |
I was trying to install Traction, so I removed the
6101104009 | FRAME BOTTOM PLATE-F&R BIGBOY |
# 19 in photo
This may have been a mistake because the wheels lifted out (after removing the screws) and the springs were found when I started to reinstall the _frame -
I really need some help!!!!!
By the way does the BB need traction on all (8) flanged wheels?
Thanks for the help
Brent
UGH! Why did you remove the frame to install the traction tires?
Gunrunnerjohn, Thanks for the question
Probably a mistake, my thinking was to remove the brake shoes and the tires would go on easier (works on my VL Hudson but it doesn't have a "frame"), the frame has the brake shoes but it holds all the wheels in place, this did not look like a problem but looks like it is.
Still need to know where the "springs go"
Thanks
Brent
Any chance of getting a better pix?
It looks like there are 2 springs for each axle.
I'm guessing the drivers are sprung, and the springs probably go between the axle and the frame #27 in the photo.
You'll probably have to remove that bottom frame with the brake shoe detail again to find out where they go.
As stated, the springs are between the axles and the frame. You should see a little recess in the frame for the springs to drop into. Truthfully, I've never taken one of these off, never saw the need to.
Added a couple of pictures, looks like the springs go into the square boxes on the axle. Is this correct?
Should there be 2 springs on all four wheels? I have found 3 .
Pictures are of the rear chassis. Have not/will not take the front frame off.
Thanks for your comments and HELP!!
Brent
Those little holes in the bronze bearings rest on the springs. If you only found three, you'll need to get another one, I'm sure it won't be happy without that spring! The good news is, they are available from the looks of things.
i need one of these as well. For some reason I was thinking that not all the axles has springs I thought the rear drivers had a brass spacer and only the front was sprung I honestly can’t remember. I know these don’t need much help coming out never the less. You can however change the tires without removing the the frame/brake arms. Takes patience but can be done
Well, with other sprung drivers, I've found the springs are just sitting in there, I just haven't taken any VL-BB's apart to that level, I never saw the need. I sometimes take the brake shoes off, and of course you have to take drive rods off, but that's usually the extent of the disassembly.
Brent, my VL Big Boy only has 4 tires located on the 2 rear axle wheels of each driver.
If you look closely at the parts breakdown picture, they removed the traction tire number (63) from the picture. Apparently, they originally planned on traction tires on all the corners. It only appears on the rear now.
Wonders will never cease!! I have installed the traction tires and the frame, bought 5 springs in case a couple sprang off the work space.
thanks for all the comments

The real question is, does it run?
