VLBB Questions

1) Every remote coupler I have ever had makes a buzzing noise; Lionel, MTH and K-Line, PS-1, TMCC, and Legacy.  That is the nature of the electric solenoid, which is also the same type of thing used in the Atlas switch machines.

 

2) How are you trying to deplete the coal load in demo mode?  You much have the train stopped, and then you rock the brake/boost roller all the way to break and hold, and keep holding.  It will only go down while holding the roller all the way to break.  To refill you push and hold the reset (zero) button and can let go as soon as you see the coal coming up, but to deplete it you have to keep holding it as it'll stop as soon as you release the break roller.

Until now I don't think I've ever fired the rear coupler on any of my Legacy or VL locos. We do it all the time with our MTH engines and I guess we're spoiled by MTH, as the only sound ever heard is the recorded sound of a metal coupler opening and closing - so this was my comparison point.  I'm going to get out another Lionel loco tonight and see if it too makes that buzzing noise - curious now.

In terms of the depleting coal load, I did exactly what the manual says to do - which works on my buddy's VLBB - depress and hold the break button. I will rock it down too as you've suggested and I'm sure this will work.

Thanks MartyE, as I was curious about this also. It seems to take a good bit of time for

the coal to go down, so to speak, however going up is also slow, so to speak. This is a really neat feature. Thanks for the heads up. I may have been doing this wrong also.

I fired up my VLBB this morning and it wouldn't move!  It also made some obviously programmed mechanical sounds that I have never heard before, very strange.  The whistle, bell, etc. responded, but the smoke units didn't work either.  A power cycle got it's mind right, but that's the first time I had an oddity like that!

 

Sounds like a temperamental locomotive!  I had a similar electronic issue (I posted in Alex M's thread about one of my rear LED tender lights exhibiting very weird behavior). 

 

It appears as if it just worked itself out over time, the light works perfectly now (knock on wood).

Good thing you haven't done anything that voids the warranty

is this the first time you fired the VLBB since you ran the 4 together at your club?

Could be, it missed the coal smoke from the three in front, it didn't know what to do when it just saw track in front.

GRW, I thought it was just me.  A couple of days ago I fired up my BB for the first time that day - lights came on and it made noises but no throttle response.  Reset had no effect.  I turn off the power and fired her up again and everything work fine.  It has been working fine since.  

Yep, it was pretty odd, but a simple power cycle solved it.

Ohes Noes!  Does this mean they are running Windows?  When in doubt, reboot!

Not a chance!  They would have to PAY for licenses.... Linux or bust, baby!!!
